8.26.93 - Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, Portland, OR ("The Schnitz") Opening act: Baby Gramps Set I Set II Runaway Jim "2001 Theme" -> Guelah...-> David Bowie (!) Asse Festival -> Lifeboy Neil Young Joke -> Rift (!!) ...Papyrus Jesus Left Chicago (!!!) Reba Lizards Fee (w/megaphone) "Mice & Bats" w/Baby Gramps Split Open and Melt Chalkdust Torture Esther It's Ice -> Encore Harry Hood Freebird Golgi Apparatus As Kyle already said, they brought back the Neil Young joke from the April Fool's Show, with far fewer people biting this time. The first set was typically Phishy, the second is where they REALLY took off. The closing part to Bowie went on and on and on. The Rift was by far the fastest I have ever heard anywhere, and the Jesus Left showcased two of the best keyboardists and guitarists in the biz today. The "Mice & Bats" song was a Baby Gramps original with Fish on vac, Trey on guitar (after he hastily gave up the drums), and Mike trying to keep up with Baby Gramps - and succeeding only a few measures at a time. Like a previous post said: "Now I can say I've seen everything!" Security was pretty cool, although they busted a nice clean-looking kid in our row for I suppose what was in his bota bag. During the break I got to meet Colin Robinson of bumper-sticker fame, and saw about a dozen net shirts there. All in all, well worth the hassle of having a job which allows me to get up to Portland when it's REALLY IMPORTANT TO BE THERE. Alek "Phish - Worth Going Deaf Over" 27 hrs to the last show of the Tour!
