It was pointed out to me recently that we need to make an extra effort to get this kind of stuff out, so here it is. If you have a file(1) compatible with the one in sysVr3 adding the following lines to /etc/magic will make it recognize compressed files. I was motivated to add this when I imported a bunch of files from BSD systems and the .Zs all got lopped off. 0 short 40223 compressed data >2 byte <0200 - %d bits >2 byte 0214 - 12 bits >2 byte 0215 - 13 bits >2 byte 0220 - 16 bits -- Steve Nuchia | [...] but the machine would probably be allowed no mercy. uunet!nuchat!steve | In other words then, if a machine is expected to be (713) 334 6720 | infallible, it cannot be intelligent. - Alan Turing, 1947 Article 8256 of comp.unix.admin: Xref: ptd comp.unix.admin:8256 comp.unix.programmer:7289 Newsgroups: comp.unnix,comp.unix.admin,comp.unix.programmer Path: ptd!hfglobe!ichips!iWarp.intel.com|uunet!mcsun!dxcern!sunra10.cern.ch!pb From: pb@sunra10.cern.ch (Peter Beckmann) Subject: Re: files and /etc/magic Message-ID: <1992Oct28.134207.2138@dxcern.cern.ch> Sender: news@dxcern.cern.ch (USENET News System) Reply-To: peterb@dxcern.cern.ch Organization: CERN European Lab for Particle Physics References: <1992Oct27.154107.1768@linus.mitre.org> <1992Oct28.123526.16863@uk03.bull.co.uk> Date: Wed, 28 Oct 1992 13:42:07 GMT Lines: 79 Here is some stuff i picked off the net. 0 string 2 string /bin/sh - Bourne shell >2 string /usr/bin/sh - Bourne shell >2 string /bin/ksh - Korn shell >2 string /usr/local/bin/ash - NeilBrown's ash >2 string /usr/local/bin/ae - NeilBrown's ae >2 string /home/harry/bin/perl - Perl >2 string /usr/local/bin/perl - Perl >2 string /usr/bin/perl - Perl >2 string /bin/awk - AWK >2 string /bin/nawk - new AWK >2 string /usr/bin/nawk - new AWK >2 string /usr/local/bin/nawk - new AWK >2 string /bin/gawk - GNU AWK >2 string /usr/local/bin/gawk - GNU AWK >2 string /bin/csh - C shell >2 string /usr/bin/csh - C shell >2 string /usr/bin/tcsh - tcsh shell >2 string /bin/tcsh - tcsh shell 0 string GIF GIF image archive >3 string 87a - version %3s >3 string 87A - version %3s >3 string 89a - version %3s >3 string 89A - version %3s 0 long 0xffd8ffe0 JPEG image, big endian 0 long 0xe0ffd8ff JPEG image, little endian 0 string hsi1 HSI1 image (wrapper for JPEG?) # for sc files 38 string Spreadsheet sc file
