Hats in Paris

We were traveling in Paris with our two boys several years ago.  Part of the trip was for my wife to spend a day studying French Art Song in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.  Since this was not the boys' idea of fun, I took them "subway surfing" on the Metro: we'd pick a random train, get on and ride for a few stops, hop off and look around the neighborhood to see where we were, then try another train.

We had been at this for awhile, enjoying the French sights and sounds, and were waiting for another train, when I heard an American accent behind me: "There's someone else from Oregon".  I turned, wondering who was this and how did they know where I was from.  He must have seen the question on my face, and pointed to my The Edge hat, which says "Made fresh daily in the Oregonian" on the back.  Michael Curry introduced himself - he was in Paris to talk to a client about a new puppet design project.  I had heard that he'd recently moved into the Portland area, into the little town where I grew up, so we chatted a bit, then went on our respective ways.

Now I make it a point to wear my Edge hat more often when I'm out of state, just in case.
